What to do if your iPhone speaker breaks

iPhone /

An iPhone 5s speaker not working can be devastating for anyone who likes to listen to their music without headphones, whether it's because you don't like the way headphones feel in your head, or if you just like to share with your music with your friends. Calls, too, can be difficult. It is much harder to jam headphones in your ears than it is to just pick up an iPhone 5s and put a phone to your head. Luckily, fixing your iPhone 5s speaker problem doesn't have to be difficult. After running just a few diagnostic tests, you can figure out whether or not you need to have the speaker itself replaced. If you do, then you can follow our step-by-step instruction for replacing it, or send it to us to have it repaired.

To make sure that your speaker works, go into your Control Center in the iPhone and make sure that the volume is turned on. Be sure that nothing is plugged in to the headset jack. Apple Support recommends that you take a soft-bristled brush (a spare toothbrush is a good home electronics repair item) and scrub in the headphone slot to make sure that no detritus is stuck in the headphone jack, as that can sometimes cause the iPhone to believe that there are headphones plugged in and refuse to play sound through speakers.

It's not any of those other problems, my speakers are busted, please help
OK, so your speakers are broken. There is a good repair guide that goes in to the exact details on how to fix a broken iPhone 5s speaker at iMore, but we will go over the basics with you to help you get an idea of what you're in for if you choose to do a home repair. Here are the steps:

  • Power off your iPhone 5
  • Remove the front screen
  • Remove the battery
  • Remove the Lightning dock connector assembly
  • Swap the loud speaker assembly
  • Replace the dock connector assembly
  • Replace the battery
  • Reconnect the display assembly
  • Test the speaker

That's a lot of steps. To do this you'll need a spudger, some suction cups to remove the front face of the iPhone, and a couple other tools for unscrewing and screwing the different screws in the iPhone. If this seems like it is too complicated, then just send it to us here at iResQ. We'd love to help you get your phone back in working condition.
