The Cost of iPad or MacBook Insurance Versus Repair

How-to Repairs

Many schools across the country have decided to supply their students with iPads and MacBooks. Research has shown it’s an effective learning tool, and with all of the advancements in technology, it just makes sense to use them in an educational setting.

Since iPads and MacBooks are not as durable as textbooks are, they are susceptible to damage. Students may drop them, which leads to cracked iPad and MacBook screens. And since they are electronics, sometimes internal mechanisms may become damaged just from normal use.

Many schools have purchased iPad and MacBook insurance when supplying their students with these devices. The unfortunate thing about this is that it can be a waste of money.

Most insurance plans for iPads and MacBooks require the school to pay an annual fee. This fee can be hundreds of dollars. Schools have to pay this amount no matter if they need to repair devices throughout the school year. Sometimes, some schools only send in two or three devices to be repaired, but they are paying for insurance on hundreds of devices.

This is how insurance companies make their money though. It’s just like having homeowners insurance. You are paying hundreds of dollars a year for it, even though you may not have anything happen to your home in which you need your insurance company to pay for.

The only difference between homeowners insurance and iPad and MacBook insurance is that repairing your home after a disaster could cost you thousands of dollars, but repairing an iPad or MacBook may only cost you a couple hundred dollars.

For example, if a student cracks an iPad screen, we can fix it for $134.99. If you only have two to fix in a year, you would only pay $270. That’s much less than most insurance companies will charge you for their policy to cover the damage.

If a student cracks a MacBook screen, we only charge you $199. Again, much less than what insurance is going to charge you for coverage.
