When something goes wrong with your device, it can be difficult to decide whether you should bother repairing it or replacing it with a new one. At iResQ, we want to repair every device that comes into our hands. However, that’s not always possible. Sometimes, we sadly have to report to the customer that the device is unsalvageable.
Since many people are hopeful they’ll receive their device as good as new when they get it back from us, we want to help people understand when devices are most likely unable to be repaired.
Extreme Water Damage
One of the only instances in which a device is unable to be repaired is if it suffers extreme water damage. When we say EXTREME, we mean that the entire inside of the phone has been saturated with water.
What would be an example of extreme water damage?
Dropping your iPhone into a bowl of water and leaving it there over night.
Dropping your iPhone in the toilet and immediately pulling it out is not an example of extreme water damage.
Most parts in an iPhone, iPad, etc. can be replaced without having to replace the entire device. These parts often cost much less than buying a new device. However, there’s one exception – if the logic board is toast.
If the logic board comes into contact with water and becomes corroded because of it, it could be a pricey repair. It means that the logic board has to be replaced and probably other parts. In this case, a total replacement is probably your best option.
Here’s the thing though:
You won’t know if the logic board is damaged unless you have someone experienced look at it for you. It’s not as easy as you think to get water to the logic board. It’s very protected with all of the other parts surrounding it. Yes, that means, even if your phone has been sitting in water for a while, it’s possible still cheaper to repair it than replace it because the water didn’t reach the logic board.
