Which Generation iPod do I have?

1st and 2nd Generation iPod

These iPods can be identified by their Scroll Wheels and controls (Play, Menu, Next, Previous) appear in a circle around the wheel. Although very similar, the 2nd Generation iPod's Scroll Wheel does not physically move.

3rd Generation iPod

This iPod can be recognized by it's all white face plate and 4 buttons aligned horizontally below the screen and a Touch Wheel below the buttons.

4th Generation and U2 iPod

This iPod has a white face plate with a gray Click Wheel just below the screen, the first iPod to employ the Click Wheel and remove buttons from the factplate. Modeled after the 4th Generation iPod, the U2 iPod is a special edition with a 20GB hard drive. The U2 Version iPod can be identified by its black plastic front case, red Click Wheel, and signatures of the U2 band members engraved on the back.

iPod w/ Video (Rev 1, 5th Generation)

This iPod is thinner than the original 4th generation iPod. It is available in the 30GB or 60GB model. Choice of black or white faceplate. You are able to play songs, watch videos, and view photos all with the click wheel!

iPod w/ Video (Rev 2, Late 2006)

Similar to the original iPod with Video, this revision comes with a 30GB and 80GB hard drive and a brighter screen. This iPod also contains greater battery power that the 1st edition of the 5th gen iPod.

iPod Nano

This iPod was introduced September 2005, and resembles the 4th Generation iPod Photo but is much smaller and lighter. They have a 2GB or 4GB capacity and have either a white or black faceplate with a color screen and you are able to view album and audiobook cover art using a smaller Click Wheel.

iPod Nano (2nd Generation)

Thinner than the original iPod Nano, you can choose between 5 colors. These nanos have 2GB, 4GB, and 8GB hard drive capacities and a brighter screen.

1st and 2nd Generation Mini

Smaller than the 1st - 4th Generation iPods, these little guys come with a sleek color aluminum case. Both generations have a Click Wheel, although the 2 Generation Mini Click Wheel has color coordinated icons to match the case color. Also the 2 Generation Mini has the hard drive size etched on the back, either "4GB" or "6GB", the 1 Generation does not.

Photo

Also similar to the 4th Generation iPod, the Photo has a white face plate and gray Click Wheel below its COLOR display. You are able to view album and audiobook cover art.

iPod Shuffle

This iPod is smaller than a pack of gum! Every time you listen to your favorite tunes, they're in a different order! The shuffle has no LCD or Click Wheel, just buttons.

iPod Shuffle (2nd Generation)

Without a LCD screen, this is the world's smallest mp3 player! It holds 240 songs (1GB) and has a clip on the back so you can clip it to your pants.

iPod Nano (3rd Generation)

This is the latest generation of the iPod Nano and was released in September 2007. It now comes with a 2" diagonal LCD screen and has the capability to playback video via the Click Wheel.

iPod Classic

This is the newest iPod of this class. It sports a brushed aluminum faceplate in either black or silver. It comes stock with an 80GB and 160GB hard drive and is thinner than its predecessor, the 5th Generation iPod or iPod Video.

iPod Touch

Also released in September of 07 was the iPod Touch, disregarding the click wheel to introduce a revolutionary multi-touch surface on an iPod. This iPod has a 3.5" LCD screen and comes in an 8GB, 16GB and 32GB model.
